13 Reasons Why- During high school I went through a phase of depression, and someone had suggested this would be a good book to read. It was extremely relatable and helped me feel less alone. It is a story of a girl who committed suicide and the narrator is a boy that is finding out her story for the first time through the tapes she had recorded and sent out before she died. They contained the 13 reasons why she killed herself, and the boy is one of the reasons. It told the story in such a way that I never wanted to put the book down.
Stone Butch Blues- I read this book for a class I had, and it really opened my eyes to how messed up humans can be. I never really understood how homosexuals, especially butches were treated in the 60’s. No person should be denied love and if you disagree I highly recommend you read this book, it will definitely have you rethinking your beliefs. This book is extremely controversial.
A Corner of the Universe- This book taught me that it is okay to be different, and to go against the grain. It is a great book for anyone who has ever been made fun of or has known someone with a mental illness. My dad was quite strict when it came to how he wanted things done, this book taught me at an early age that it is okay to do things differently and to always question things to form my own opinion. I am a person who will lift the corners of the universe.
Your choices all sound interesting, and you explain well how they influenced you.
ReplyDeleteThe first books seems tragically dark, however the summary your provided makes it sound to good to pass up. For the second book, I am incredibly happy your eyes were opened up to the discrimination the LGBT community faces still to this day as I have been a member of LGBT clubs since I was 14
